Speaking Up Training
Low awareness of organisational reporting channels and lack of understanding of harmful behaviours, particularly those that are not overt, are common reasons people do not feel safe to speak up.
This training module will help you to foster a strong speak-up culture in your organisation through supporting your people to identify harmful behaviour, even in its most covert forms, and to know what they do if they witness or experience this harmful behaviour.
By the end of the training, participants will:

Have a clear understanding of the options for speaking up at your organisation if they experience or witness harmful behaviour

About this course
About this course
This module is designed to introduce your Report + Support™ platform, or the alternative reporting mechanisms you have available at your organisation. It will raise awareness of what harmful behaviour is and how to report it at your organisation.
We will discuss types of harmful behaviour that can be reported, exploring both overt and covert harmful behaviours, and explore what a speak-up culture looks like in practice. We will explain the barriers to reporting and how your speak up process works against these. The aim is to build trust and confidence in your organisation’s speak up process.
What the session covers
The content is tailored to your organisation, but typically includes:
- Understanding harmful behaviour in practice- What harmful behaviours look like across workplaces and universities, and why speak-up cultures matter
- Barriers to reporting- The personal, cultural, and organisational barriers that can discourage people from coming forward
- Raising awareness of your speak up channels- Educating employees and students on how they can speak up about harmful behaviour if they experience or witness it
- Managing expectations around speaking up: Ensuring people know what they can expect from your organisation if they choose to speak up about harmful behaviour, including the support and range of resolutions to reports available

FAQs
Questions about Speaking Up Training? We've got answers.
Speak up training helps employees and students recognise harmful behaviour, including overt and covert forms such as bullying, harassment and sexual harassment, and understand how to report it. The training builds awareness of an organisation's reporting channels and explains how to speak up if someone experiences or witnesses harmful behaviour.
People often stay silent because they are unaware of the reporting channels available to them or struggle to recognise less overt forms of harmful behaviour. Personal, cultural, and organisational barriers also discourage people from coming forward, which is why addressing these barriers directly is central to building a genuine speak up culture.
Speak up training typically covers four areas: what harmful behaviour looks like in practice, the barriers that stop people reporting, how to use an organisation's speak up channels, and what to expect from the process once a report is made, including the support and resolutions available.
Speak up training usually runs for 90 minutes and is designed for all staff. It can be delivered virtually or in person, and works well for organisations launching a new speak up platform or re-launching an existing one.
