    Be an active bystander.

Being an active bystander means making it your responsibility to call out negative and potentially harmful behaviour.

It’s not always obvious physical assault. Sometimes, a situation just doesn’t feel right. It might be comments made by a friend that you feel are inappropriate or you might spot someone being harassed at a party or club. If you’re not sure whether behaviour is crossing the line or not, ask yourself… How would you feel if it was happening to you? Would you want someone to have the courage to speak up?

The fact is, in a climate of indifference, verbal or physical attacks on others will continue to happen.

It’s no longer an option to look the other way. So it’s important we all know when, and how, to intervene safely and positively in harmful situations.

Here are some ways you could take action:

  • 1

    Call it out

Call out the perpetrator then and there. Tell them that their behaviour is not ok.

  • 2

    Get help

Inform somebody else with power or social authority so they can get involved.

  • 3

    Empathise and engage

Ask the victim if they're ok and if they need your help. Or, distract them by engaging with them.

  • 4

    Report it

Report the incident, so that organisations and individuals can make changes.

You should never put yourself at risk by intervening, if a situation is dangerous call 999.

The time is now to bring about a cultural change, and make the world a better and safer place for everyone. Sign our pledge and tell the world you’re taking a stand.
